Chief Billy Joe Laboucan
I am a Cree linguist, storyteller, curriculum developer, educator, narrator, leadership trainer, interpreter, and researcher. I am of Cree, Métis, and Dené Soułine descent and currently serve as the Chief of the Lubicon Lake Band.
I spent the first nine years of my life in northern Alberta, where my parents and extended family lived a traditional lifestyle on the traplines. We regularly attended spiritual ceremonies and listened to legends and stories, which deeply influenced my work and education.
I hold a Master’s in Education specializing in literacy and language development from the University of Alberta. My undergraduate degree is in Linguistics, Languages, and Literacy from the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (now First Nations University of Canada).
Today, I specialize in Cree language and cultural instruction, leadership training, curriculum development, and Indigenous storytelling.
Bryan Laboucan
I am from the Lubicon Lake Band and have a deep connection to hunting and fishing. One of my favorite memories is hunting with my dad and harvesting a huge bull moose.
My favorite food is moose meat with fried bannock.
One of my favorite quotes is, “It is what it is, lol.” This phrase reflects my ability to accept life’s challenges with humor and strength. My greatest accomplishment has been stepping into leadership to advocate for the Lubicon people.
Cody Letendre
I was born and raised in Loon River First Nation and have always had a deep connection to the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, jet boating, and spending time with family at our cabin are some of my greatest joys. Growing up without the distractions of smartphones and computers meant every day was an adventure outside, fostering a love for nature and tradition.
One of my favorite quotes is, “We must not be prisoners of our past but architects of our future.” My greatest personal achievement has been truly understanding myself and recognizing that we are often our own harshest critics.
When it comes to food, nothing beats the taste of moose meat—especially a hearty bowl of dry meat soup with bannock.
